The Dutch Innovation Award looks at a company’s capacity for innovation as well as the positive impact the company’s innovative technology has on society and the environment.

MIMETAS was declared this year's winner due to the company's pioneering innovation focusing on a societal challenge. MIMETAS is a global leader in human disease models used for discovering and developing new medicines and treatments. One of the company's products is the OrganoPlate®. This is a laboratory culture plate where microscopic living models of organs are grown - such as bowel or lung tissue -  complete with blood vessels. These cultures can be infected with diseases and observed to see how the disease progresses. This ’organ-on-a-chip’ technology is a significantly better, faster and more cost-effective way of testing how diseases develop in the human body. This could lead to a revolution in the pharmaceutical industry.
